Saint Joseph the Worker

9”x12” Brush & Ink on Bristol Smooth.

The life of Saint Joseph is depicted in the panels formed from a carpenter’s square. Beginning on the bottom right and moving clockwise, the panels show Saint Joseph’s engagement to Mary, his dream, Mary and Joseph’s arrival in Bethlehem, Jesus’s birth, the Holy Family’s flight to Egypt, and the finding in the temple. The main panel shows Saint Joseph teaching the young Jesus carpentry skills. Saint Joseph is usually shown holding lilies, so I have incorporated them into the border.

Celtic Saint Anthony of Padua

9”x12” Brush & Ink on Bristol Smooth.

Saint Anthony is shown in his usual pose of holding the Christchild on a book, however I have adapted it slightly to have the Christchild reaching up to hug the saint. The hammers on top of the book represent his title as the Hammer of the Heretics and I have also used lilies in the border as he is usually shown holding a lily.

The Holy Family makes up the center focal point of this piece with the Archangel Gabriel overhead. The upper panels feature the shepherds and their flocks on the left and the three magi on the right. The vines representing the tree of life are emerging from two chalices, representing the Eucharist.

Celtic Saint Michael the Archangel

9”x12” Brush & Ink on Bristol Smooth.

In this artwork, Saint Michael is depicted in the middle of his battle with Satan. One of his duties is to separate the souls destined for Heaven and Hell which is represented by the scales at the top of the piece. On the left, Cerebus is ready to devour the souls headed for Hell while, on the right, God has raised his hands to receive the souls destined for Heaven.

Celtic Cross of Saint Patrick

Brush & Ink on Bristol Smooth.

The life of Saint Patrick is depicted in the crossbar. The evangelical eagle represents his translation of the Lindsferne Gospels. In the bottom shaft, he is shown stepping on a snake as he is said to have driven the snakes out of Ireland. The triqueta (or trinity knot) appears to represent Saint Patrick’s explanation of the Holy Trinity using the clover. In the base of the cross, are some designs that are seen on the Armagh chalice.
