Fionn, Bran, & Sceolan

Pen & Ink on Natural Clamshell.

This seashell Fionn with his two hunting dogs, Bran (the dog in back) and Sceolan (the dog in front) tracking the deer, Sadhbh, who is actually a beautiful woman enchanted into the deer form by the rejected Fear Doirche from the Otherworld. Bran and Sceolan, having their own supernatural elements, refuse to harm her once they have tracked the deer down. Since dogs with a connection to the Otherworld are generally depicted as white with red ears, I crosshatched Bran and Sceolan's ears with vertical lines which, in heraldry, represent the colour red. The shell itself is from Belmar, New Jersey, USA.

Finding Oisín

This seashell design features a young Oisín, Finn's son by Sadhbh, playing with Bran and Sceolan, Finn's dogs, who have just located him while out searching for Sadhbh, Finn's wife who had been turned into a deer again by Fear Doirche. Seeing how the two dogs protect the boy, Finn realises that the boy is his son and, upon learning about the deer that raised him, decides to call him Oisín meaning 'Little Fawn'. Oisín's mother, Sadhbh, appears in deer form in the bottom left of the shell. The shell itself is from Belmar, New Jersey, USA.

Plum Blossom

I wanted to try a bit of east meets west with this shell so I looked at Japanese flower crests that I thought might go well with an Insular-style design and decided to start with the plum blossom. What developed was this seashell design featuring Japanese-style plum blossoms growing on Celtic Tree-of-Life inspired vines amidst ladybugs, a couple of koi, and interlace. A few miniature plum blossoms line the top and right edge of the shell. The shell itself is from Belmar, New Jersey, USA.
